How To: Store & Organize Your Jewelry

Episode #50 of Friday Live with Sierra is filled with great ideas for how to store your jewelry. For those of you who would rather read than watch, read on for an overview of what I discussed in the video. What to use to store and organize your jewelry: 1. In drawers – shallow drawers seem to work best, but by using dividers, trays, boxes and other organizing methods, you can maximize any drawer space. 2. On the wall – there are both ready made and diy methods that make wonderful storage/display options. You can use a bit of wall tucked out of the way in your closet, or turn…

I have a painting studio again!!

For those of you that have know me for years and years, can you imagine coming into my home and not seeing a painting studio somewhere? Ever since I had my first apartment out of college (and away from campus studio space), I have a had a huge easel set up and a room to paint in. Well not always it’s own room, in one apartment, I made my kitchen the studio. But as I painted way more than I cooked at that time, it made sense. But when I moved to Texas 6 years ago, I had to use a shipping pod to move my stuff so that everything…

    No More Notifications

Apparently, I’m one of the last people to do this, but this past week I removed all of the notification dots from my iphone. It has been amazing. The week before, I stopped all notifications from popping up on my locked screen or when I was using the phone. I didn’t really think about the dots when I made the initial adjustment, so it was a kind of baby stepping withdrawal, and it feet so good that I just kept going. What made me want to do this was that as social media was such a large part of my day work wise, it was getting harder than ever to feel like I was…

    Behind The Scenes – Production

For those of you who don’t already know, I (Sierra), make all of the jewelry here at Manic Trout in my Austin studio. Over the years, I have brought in various artisans to do piece work for me, but I always make to sure to finish each piece as a way to ensure the high standards you are used to with the jewelry. The question I am most often asked is how I manage to do this, so I thought I would share the how today and with it, a bit of the why. We’ll start with a little business lesson. I design 4 collections a year and each collection…

Get You House Guest Ready In Under 10 Minutes

One of the best parts about getting older is that the “drop by” is rarely done. I can’t remember the last time I drove near a friends house and thought, “oh, I’ll just knock on their door and see if they’re home”. Although in writing this, I realize that it most likely has more to do with cell phones rather than age. But I do think that age is still a factor as I’m sure, women especially know that the thought of someone just showing up on your own doorstep unannounced fills you with such dread that you would never do that to someone. So let’s all take a moment…

How To Organize Your Jewelry Box

Even the most organized among us often over look one area when we sort, purge and clean out our homes and that is the jewelry box. Or, um, boxes/hooks/shelves which may be the case for those of you who share my love for statement jewelry. The truth is that your jewelry should be gone through at least once a year to check for loose stones, tarnish and other repairs or attention needed. This also provides a great chance to change the way you store and display pieces if you feel you haven’t been wearing everything and even getting rid of the pieces that you no longer want. First We Gather…

    5 Rules To Organize Anything

Organizing is never something that I do, it just happens. If I look at a shelf and a pile of items to go on it, there is no thought process that really goes on, I just put the items on the shelf and there they are, all organized. I however think that this happens as I have conditioned my brain over the years to see a pile, break it down in my head of how to process it and then place it accordingly. The basis of the conditioning is to live by these 5 rules which can be applied to an area of your life: your home, your desk, your…

Top 5 Favorite Things Right Now

I enjoyed my Top 5 Favorite Things so much a few weeks ago, that I have decided to do it again. That’s the beauty of having your own blog after all, you share whatever you want. 1. Jelly hair elastics. I have been using these for a few years and feel that it is my duty as a person with fine long hair who is athletic to bring these up. These things do. not. move. You can jump up and down, run for miles, punch and kick shit and get soaked with sweat and your ponytail will be right where you left it. They are not the easiest to remove…

Top 5 Favorite Things Right Now

I was inspired to make this list by John and Sherry from their Young House Love podcast. They end each week with what they have been loving lately and it always make me think about what I am loving too. As I usually get excited about what they love, I thought that you may appreciate my favs too…so here we go: 1. Command Strips in brushed nickel for bathrooms. You guys…hooks for the shower that match the fixtures and don’t fall down!! I started with 4 but once I discovered how amazing these were, added 2 more. Who knew I needed 6 hooks in the shower?? What hangs on these hooks…

    June 2016

Yesterday I was organizing the piles on my desk since moving in last week and almost fell over when I realized it was already July 13th. Then I looked at my last blog post and I was even more shocked that June seemed to have not existed at all, woah. As I’m sure you assumed, the busier real life is, the less on is on the internet. June was for sure one of those times. It’s all pretty much a blur but there was a week in NY with my family, finding and closing on a house and a week of really intense packing. I may have missed the boat…
